Jet Lag Linked To Meal Times
Thursday, May 29th, 2008
Passengers on long-haul flights can help to beat jet lag by limiting the amount food they eat onboard, according to new research.
Those embarking on long journeys this summer are being advised to avoid snacking on the plane and to eat on arrival - in order to satisfy the brain’s "feeding clock", the BBC reports.
Researchers at Harvard University found changing eating habits of mice helped to significantly reduce tiredness and feel that humans may respond in a similar way.
Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Clifford Saper said: "A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this new clock.
"It’s never going to make the symptoms disappear entirely, but it could certainly make them a lot more manageable."
Other suggested ways of combating jet lag include maximising exposure to daylight and taking exercise.
